Azam Khan Gets Bail, But the Bigger Question Remains

Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan got bail from the Allahabad High Court yesterday in the dual PAN card case.

Let me give you the simple facts first. A trial court in Rampur had sentenced him to 10 years in prison in this matter. Justice Samit Gopal, hearing his revision petition, granted him bail. But the court refused to stay his sentence. So the case is not over. Far from it.

Two feelings at once

When I read this, I had two feelings.

The first feeling was this: bail is a right, not a favour. Our courts have said again and again that bail should be the rule and jail the exception. If a senior citizen leader gets bail while his appeal is heard, that is the system working as it should.

The second feeling was harder. Why does this take so long for everyone? Why do so many cases against politicians, from every party, drag on for years? By the time there is a final answer, the public has forgotten what the case was even about.

Politicians and cases

Azam Khan has faced many cases over the years. His supporters say it is political revenge. His opponents say he is finally facing the law. I do not want to be the judge here. That is the court’s job.

But I will say this. In India, a case against a leader often becomes a political weapon. The ruling side uses it to attack. The opposition uses it to play victim. And the truth gets lost in the middle.

That is not good for anyone. Not for the leader. Not for the party. And definitely not for the voter who just wants to know: is this person honest or not?

What I want to see

I want fast-track courts for cases against elected representatives. Real fast-track, not just a name on a board. Decide in one year. If guilty, punish. If innocent, clear the name with the same loudness with which it was dirtied.

That is fair to the leader. And fair to the people.

About Uttar Pradesh

UP politics is heating up before 2027. Every move now has a political shadow. Azam Khan’s bail will be seen through that lens too. Samajwadi Party supporters will feel relief. Others will raise questions.

I just hope the courts stay far away from all that noise. Justice should not look at the calendar of elections.

A small thought

I always tell young people who want to join politics: keep your papers clean. Your PAN, your tax, your property, everything. One small mistake can follow you for decades. Honesty is not only a moral thing. It is a practical thing.
