SP + Congress in UP 2027: Real Alliance or Just a Seat Fight?
Every time someone asks me, “Can SP and Congress form the government in Uttar Pradesh in 2027?”, I smile. Because in politics, the honest answer is always, “It depends.” Today, let me explain what it depends on.
Where things stand today
The Uttar Pradesh Assembly has 403 seats. Elections are due in early 2027. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, SP and Congress fought together and won 43 of UP’s 80 seats, 37 for SP and 6 for Congress. That was a big surprise for many people.
Both parties now say the alliance will continue. Akhilesh Yadav has said that seats will go to whoever can win them, and that “winnability” is the only criterion.
The seat-sharing tussle
This is where it gets interesting.
- Congress UP in-charge Rajendra Pal Gautam told PTI the party has submitted a list of 175 to 200 seats.
- SP sources, as reported by India TV and others, are thinking of giving Congress around 60 to 70 seats.
- Congress reportedly hopes to finish seat talks by November 15.
- SP MP Ramashankar Rajbhar claimed the formula is “finalised”, and said the SP manifesto will come out on November 26.
So one side says 200, the other side thinks 60. Senior SP leader Udaiveer Singh even asked Congress leaders to stop negotiating through the media. That tells you the talks are not easy.
Can they really win?
A fresh signal came this week. In the UP MLC elections, the SP won five of 11 seats, including both seats in Varanasi. BJP won six. That is a small electorate, but it gives the alliance confidence.
Still, I want to be honest. The BJP is in power in UP, has a strong organisation, and has won the last two Assembly elections. The opposition cannot win only on anger. It needs clear candidates, a common message and zero infighting.
What I have seen in alliances
In Andhra Pradesh, we have seen what a well-planned alliance can do. When partners respect each other, share seats sensibly and speak with one voice, voters notice. When they fight over every seat in public, voters also notice, and they punish it.
My view is simple. If SP and Congress settle seats quickly and fight as one family, they will give the BJP a serious contest. If the seat fight drags on till the last minute, the alliance may only exist on paper.
My final thought
It is too early to say who will form the government. Elections are still months away, and many things can change. But the next few weeks of seat talks will tell us a lot.
What do you think? Will SP and Congress settle their seat fight and give BJP a tough fight in 2027? Tell me in the comments.
